Why are local and regional governments essential for promoting, fulfilling, and respecting human rights?
The City has been committed to these issues for decades, in the awareness that the protection of human rights constitutes an essential foundation on which to base the development of a local community that is attentive to each and every one of its members and with a worldview. On 10 December 2018, Padova was declared a “city of refuge” for human rights defenders and became a reference point for the Padova node of the “In Difesa Di” network, which involves other local administrations, the University of Padova, a professional association, and numerous civil society organizations.
Why are human rights relevant values and a useful framework for guiding local action?
Local governments should be the main promoters of respect for human rights, fostering targeted policies in the territory of reference which, however, are inspired by the international context on the basis of a "glocal" perspective.
Joining the campaign will allow the Municipality of Padova to connect with an international network that can promote dialogue, exchange, and updates concerning various advocacy initiatives promoted by the administration.
