Public administration is an important transmission belt of a democratic society committed to human rights. In its democratic and social orientation, it provides services of general interest, technical infrastructure and public goods. Enabling participation – politically, socially and culturally – is a core municipal competence. The implementation of human rights orientation on the local level supports people in living in dignity, finding protection and demanding democratic rights. It not only contributes to improving the living conditions of disadvantaged people or groups, it also helps them to know their rights and to know their rights and are able to assert them. In this way, the municipality can make an important contribution to human rights by supporting the work of colleagues in the municipality in their administrative actions, promoting peaceful and respectful coexistence, and encouraging civil society to develop a vibrant culture of human rights.
Obligated to its past and its entanglements during the Nazi period in Germany, the City of Nuremberg feels particularly committed to human rights and takes the responsibility for a peace- and respectful living together in a plural and diverse modern urban society.
We are convinced that – at least in Europe and Germany – many pressing issues can´t be solved by the national level/government. For this reason we need more and more Human Rights Cities to speak out and not only express the needs but also prove that local governments are capable of guaranteeing fundamental rights. Furthermore the campaign rises the visibility of Human Rights Cities, enables exchange and mutual advocacy. Joining the campaign is also an act of self-assurance that we are not alone in our policy approach.
