Why are local and regional governments essential for promoting, fulfilling, and respecting human rights?
Considering that human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms for people to live with dignity in an environment of freedom, justice, and peace; local governments play an important role in promoting and protecting these rights by establishing a direct connection with citizens.
Due to their closeness to the population and the participation of citizens in municipal governance, making city-building a collective and participatory process, it is possible from this perspective to protect and sustainably respect human rights.
Why are human rights relevant values and a useful framework for guiding local action?
The role of local governments is decisive in preventing inequalities, promoting, and protecting human rights. Therefore, it is essential at the local level to establish concrete measures to preserve freedom, ensure access to basic services, and improve urban planning.
From local action, we have the capacity and great challenge to create specific measures that cover the principles of human rights. We must promote non-discrimination, fight inequalities, and achieve integration. Special attention must be paid to priority groups such as women, the elderly, children, people with disabilities, refugees, migrants, the homeless, and members of the LGBTI community.
From the Municipality of Fuenlabrada, we believe that the promotion and protection of human rights begin at the local level, and as a city that puts its citizens first, it seems important to join this very appropriate initiative.
In addition to the municipal programs and actions carried out, Fuenlabrada is part of the Alliance of Southern Municipalities for the Sustainable Development Goals along with Getafe, Leganés, Móstoles, and Alcorcón.
