The management of public life at the local level, especially in the city, has become a central element in the prevention of human rights violations and in ensuring their protection. The goals of any public policy carried out by local governments, as well as the decisions and activities related to these policies, must be aligned with the promotion of human rights in the municipality. Inequalities are avoidable, and we cannot accept or normalize them. Understanding inequalities as a consequence of human rights violations calls us to action as an Administration and drives us to address the root causes of problems in order to find transformative policies that expand the enjoyment of rights.
Today, the city experiences the same contradictions as the world we live in, reflecting realities such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to housing. It is important to recognize that these inequalities are not temporary but a consolidated reality that defines the daily lives of people in our city.
In a world where cities are becoming increasingly prominent as international actors, the role of local governments as defenders of human rights must be asserted. This role of guaranteeing rights is achieved through the planning and implementation of public policies that prevent human rights violations.
To continue deepening Barcelona’s historic commitment to the real guarantee of human rights in the city, with special emphasis on combating structural racism as a barrier to many people accessing their rights. To strengthen and create new international alliances in the defense of human rights from a municipal perspective.
