Contribution by the Seine Saint Denis Department to International Women’s Day 2021: An advanced local policy to tackle violence against women and girls

Our co-president local government of Seine Saint Denis is joining the global conversation aimed at celebrating the International Women’s Day by sharing its own policy in the field: the Departmental Observatory on Violence Against Women. This is a pioneer policy in the field, with more than 20 years experience in coordinating action at the local level to address violence against women through awareness raising, monitoring, capacity building and establishing inmediate protection channels.

The President of the Seine Saint Denis Department and Co-President of the UCLG-CSIPDHR, Stéphane Troussel, shared in a video recording the latest initiatives by the Observatory and why it is essential for local governments to take action in this field. In the same video, he also called for strengthened global cooperation among local governments on this topic, especially within UCLG and the CSIPDHR.

This other video offers a wider overview of all the activities developed by the Observatory and how could other local governments get inspired by its policy approach on the issue of violence against women. It was recorded by its Directress, Ernestine Ronai, as well as by the Directress of International Cooperation Magali Fricaudet, on the occasion of Iztapalapa’s 2019 International Conference of the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy - IOPD, which also hosted a special session dedicated to this matter.
