Huy, the first town to adopt the Global Charter-Agenda for Human Rights in the City

Local commitment to human rights has taken another step forward. After a long time promoting the signing of the Global Charter-Agenda for Human Rights in the City, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) has succeeded in the first council taking a step towards a firm commitment to the Charter.

Huy, a small town in central Belgium, has become a pioneer by officially ratifying the Charter by agreement of its municipal council at a meeting held on 3 July, 2012. In the agreement, the municipality adheres to the principles of the Charter and undertakes to take the necessary measures for the implementation of the rights recognized therein.

The Belgian town is therefore the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is expected to be a growing list of local governments adopting an unequivocalcommitment to the protection of human rights. UCLG and the Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights call on all member cities to join this movement by ratifying and implementing theCharter-Agenda for Human Rights in the City in their territories.
