Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions of 1949 (Geneva)

Wednesday, 18 September, 2019

2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols: A landmark document in international humanitarian law which contain the most important rules limiting the barbarity of war, and provide tools to protect people who do not take part in the fighting and those who can no longer fight.

A public event to commemorate the anniversary of the Geneva Conventions will take place on 18 September in Geneva with representatives of the ICRC, the Swiss and Geneva authorities, the diplomatic community and civil society.

The city of Geneva encourages UCLG members to join these celebrations and organize memorial events at their own city level.
