Committee’s reaction to the “Zero Draft” of the global New Urban Agenda

On May 2016, the zero draft of the New Urban Agenda was released, after being written by the Habitat III Bureau under the coordination of the Secretariat and based on contributions of policy papers produced by policy units’ experts, of UN member States, civil society organizations and the thematic and regional meetings that have been held.

As part of the common reflection within the Global Platform for the Right to the City and the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments, the UCLG Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights has produced an analysis of the document, pointing out its main strengths and weaknesses.

Also, local and regional governments had the chance to express their views regarding the draft on the occasion of the Hearings to Local Authorities, hold in UN headquarters in New York on 16-17 May 2016. In this forum, Patrick Braouezec, President of Plaine Commune (metropolis of Paris) and Co-President of the CSIPDHR, pointed the main challenges we have to face in order to achieve a sustainable urbanization and democratic, fair and inclusive cities.
